Favorite scene from episode 8, season 1
Time for another favorite scene from True Blood. Who wouldn’t be thrilled to find a naked Eric Northman in one’s tub? Bill Compton sure wasn’t.
Bill comes home, hears music, climbs the stairs and goes into the bathroom. It’s really lit and in the tub lies Eric. He’s relaxed and totally naked; he even has his eyes closed.
Eric: I texted you three times. Why didn’t you reply?
Bill: I hate using the number keys to type.
They talk and Eric has a request to make and he ends it by saying “Honestly, did you think you could keep her to yourself?
This whole scene is a demonstration of how Eric sees Bill. He’s no threat what so ever. Eric’s so sure about this that he can lie naked in Bills tub at his house with his eyes closed, totally relaxed. Compare this to how Bill behaves when he’s king and is the more powerful of the two. There’s an enormous difference.
True. Bill asserts his power in much less hilarious and much more petty ways. Then again, Bill is petty and insecure no matter where he is on the food chain.
This scene, though! :) I always crack up at it, because …
1. Did Eric carry his iPod with him? :)
2. He actually bothered to light candles! CANDLES!
3. He got so bored waiting for Bill, and is so completely at home in his house, he filled the bathtub, plugged in his iPod, found candles somewhere and lit them.
4. It’s still 2009 on the show, and I wonder if Bill has upgraded his phone to a full keyboard. (I can’t remember if Smart Phones were in use in 2009 already or not. Yes, I am too lazy to Google).
Yes, those are the things I think about! :))
LoL:) Sorry to say, Eric just lit the candles left from Bill and Sookie’s bath in episode 7.
And I can’t get over how small the tub looks compared to when Sookie and Bill used it.
Ew! :))
But he bothered to light them! That’s just funny to me. :)
Well, Bill is a dainty man. He probably thought he’d installed a really cool giant bathtub for himself, and then he walks in and sees Eric and it’s … “nope, that bath is rather small…” :))
You know what else I find funny? Look at the rest of Bill’s house. It wasn’t long before he complained to Sookie he couldn’t get an electrician to come out and do the wiring. And when he did get a chance to do something about that ramshackle place, the first thing he updated — and luxuriously so — is the bathroom. I mean, I get it, it’s probably the first thing I’d go for, too, but look at the style of this place compared to the rest of that hovel? It’s got pink, frilly window treatments, for goodness sake! :))
I think Bill’s house was another clue to his intentions. Is not like he has no money whatsoever so why didn’t he fixed the place? i think is because he didn’t think of staying there…Just saying.
“Oh, so you won’t answer my texts? Then I will take my clothes off, put on some soft music, light up your candles, fill up your bathtub, pour in your bubble bath, and play with your rubber ducky. How do you like my Viking’s revenge? Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr”
OMG, I can’t believe I never realized this before! The tub Bill and Sookie used seemed HUGE when they were in it. I never realized it was the SAME TUB because Eric makes it look dinky. I thought Bill had a whole other bathroom, which Eric was using.
And Eric not only used the tub where Bill and Sookie went for their post-coital chat, he even lit the candles they were using. That’s a statement, from Eric and from the show:
I am going to take your place, here and with Sookie. You can’t keep her. She is mine.
I always found Eric’s taking a bath at Bill’s place in a fit of pique because Bill didn’t answer his text messages uncharacteristically random for this show. Usually True Blood is much more aware of setting, character, and motivation. For years I’ve been puzzled by this scene. It seemed so unnecessary; just an excuse to show Eric naked. I couldn’t think of any reason why Eric would want to strip and take a random bath while waiting for Bill. He likes getting naked in other people’s houses? He acted like he was getting something over on Bill, too, which made no sense at all to me.
Now, all is clear. Eric IS taunting Bill—with his presence in the place Bill and Sookie cuddled and talked after they made love. With his vampire sense of smell, Eric probably can smell Sookie, and what they did. He’s not pleased. He pretends this is about using Sookie’s talents, but some of his pique is fueled by jealousy. Stripping naked and taking Bill’s place in the tub is a warning/challenge to Bill. He’s throwing down the gauntlet.
Thank you so much to the folks who figured out this was the same tub, the same candles. Eric’s behavior finally makes sense. This is why I love the show: anytime something just doesn’t jibe, I know there’s some layer of meaning I’m missing. Things aren’t random.
